Swimming and Diving Announces 2014-15 Award Winners

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams announced their 2014-15 award winners during their 31st annual end-of-the-year banquet on Sunday, March 29.

The Cindi Luciani Award was awarded to senior Leia Federiconi (Williamsville, N.Y.) Named after Cindi Luciani '91, this award honors the women's Most Valuable Student-Athlete in dual and championship meet competition. Team members and coaching staff vote on the recipient of the award. At the BIG EAST Championships, Federiconi came in fourth place in the 100y breaststroke finals (1:04.79). With this time, she broke her own record set last year by .42 seconds. She also broke her own record in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:14.20. Federiconi earned 196.05 points this season and finishes her career with 836.50 points, ranking 2nd all-time at Providence College.

Senior John Fatigati (Mahwah, N.J.) was honored with the Horace Bowden Award for the fourth time. Named for Horace Bowden '89, this award honors the men's Most Valuable Student-Athlete in dual and championship meet competition, as voted by the coaching staff and team. Fatigati broke his own record in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:09.01. He also set a record at the BIG EAST Championships in the 100y butterfly (50.81). Fatigati earned 272.5 points this season and closes out his career with 1244.75 points, ranking 1st all-time at Providence College.

Freshmen Katie Fallon (Warren, N.J.) and Connor Fabian (LaGrange Park, Ill.) won the O'Neill Family Award. Created in 2008, the O'Neill Family Award honors the most valuable male and female freshmen athletes in meet competitions, as voted on by the team and coaching staff. Fallon earned the most points this season for the women's team with 255.50 total points. She broke the 200m freestyle school record in her first home collegiate race (2:07.44). She also broke the 1500m freestyle by 17.18 seconds (17:53.79). At the BIG EAST Championships, Fallon earned 18th in the 500y freestyle (5:07.90) and 12th place in the 200y freestyle (1:54.49). Fabian competed in the BIG EAST Championships, placing in the finals in three individual events. In the 200y IM, he earned 16th place (1:58.57), in the 100y breaststroke, he took 9th (58.34), and in the 200y breaststroke, he placed 8th (2:07.83). Fabian finishes the season with 174.25 total points.

Sophomore Kelly Quinn (Garden City, N.Y.) won the Clara Lamore Walker Award, while junior Nicholas Teri (Garden City, N.Y.) was awarded the Jan and Brian Larkin Award. These awards recognize the female and male athletes who have improved the most during the season, as voted on by the team and coaching staff. Quinn qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 50y freestyle, the 200y freestyle, and the 100y freestyle. She competed in the finals of the 100y freestyle, placing 16th (53.85). Teri qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 50 freestyle, the 100y butterfly, and the 100y freestyle.

Freshman Kendall Jerzyk (Madison, Conn.) was awarded the Sears Diving Award. This award, named for Patrick Sears '88 and Kevin Sears '93, honors the diver who makes an outstanding contribution to the sport of diving at Providence College. In her debut season diving, Jerzyk earned a third-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships with 449.95 points on the one-meter board. This is the highest finish at the Championships in Friar history. Jerzyk earned All-Conference Honors and was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.

Sophomore Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.) and senior Justin Tse (Framingham, Mass.) won the David Hardy Coach's Award. Named for David Hardy '89, this award honors the male and female student-athletes who exhibit those qualities which Hardy brought to the swimming and diving team: loyalty, dedication, good sportsmanship, and outstanding effort in the pool and in the classroom. Smith broke the school record in the 200m backstroke earlier in the season, and finished 17th in the 500y freestyle (5:07.18), 11th in the 200y backstroke (2:05.36), and 11th in the 200y butterfly (2:08.19) at the BIG EAST Championships. Smith finishes with 130.5 total points on the season, ranking 24th all-time after her second season on the team with 426.50 points. Tse competed in the finals of the BIG EAST Championships in the 200y freestyle, earning 15th place (1:43.90), and in the 100y freestyle, placing 16th (48.50). Tse ends his career with 200.5 points on the season, and 912.50 total points ranking 3rd all-time at Providence College.
