CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Providence College volleyball team earned a split on the final day of the Boston College Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 29 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Providence opened the day with a 3-2 loss to host Boston College (25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 22-25, 9-15). The Friars bounced back for their first victory of the year with a 3-1 victory over South Alabama (25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19). Providence completed play at the tournament with a 1-2 overall record.
In the Friars' first match of the day versus Boston College, Providence won two of the first three sets. Boston College battled to take a 25-22 victory in the fourth set, which forced a fifth and deciding set to determine the match. In the fifth set, the Eagles edged Providence, 15-9.
Junior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) registered a match-high 17 kills and finished second among her teammates in digs, with 14. Junior Marina Rose (Coventry, Conn.) contributed 16 kills in the Friars' effort. Senior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) was credited with 48 assists in the match, in addition to eight digs and two kills. Junior Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) led all players with 19 digs.
In the Friars' four-set victory over South Alabama (3-1), three players recorded double-digit kills. Once again, Fitzgerald led the way with 15 kills. Freshmen Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) and Emily Horner (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded 13 kills each.
Four players also notched double-digit digs in the victory. Wiesler led Providence with 14 digs and also contributed a team-best 39 assists and one service ace. Cruz added 13 digs, seven assists and a team-best two aces. Fitzgerald and sophomore Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Providence returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 1 against intra-state rival Bryant. The match will be played on the campus of Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. at 5:00 p.m.
