PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced on Wednesday, Sept. 23 that the Providence College men's soccer team earned the Team Academic Award for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Friars were one of 867 soccer teams (307 men, 558 women) to earn the NSCAA Academic Award with an overall GPA of 3.14. Providence was one of 217 schools to have both its men's and women's programs recognized. This was the first time in program history that the men were recognized for the honor.

The NSCAA Team Academic Award is given to those teams that exemplify a strong commitment to academics. In order to receive the award, the teams overall GPA must exceed a 3.0. The award is a reflection of the strong emphasis that the team places on academics in their role as student-athletes. The Providence College coaching staff stresses excelling in the classroom as well as out on the field.

In addition to earning the Team Academic Award, the Friars excelled on the field in their 2014 campaign. Providence won its first BIG EAST title and advanced to the NCAA College Cup semifinal.

The Friars will kick-off BIG EAST conference play with a game at Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26.
