PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team defeated the Xavier Musketeers, 2-1, in overtime. The Friars improve to 5-5 (1-2 BIG EAST) and Xavier moves to 4-3-2 (2-1 BIG EAST).

In the 30th minute, Xavier's Majed Osman scored off of a penalty kick to take the lead at 1-0.

Providence responded with a goal off of a penalty kick just 11 minutes later. Julian Gressel (Neustdat an der Aisch, Geramany) registered his fifth goal of the season and knotted the game at 1-1.

After the first half Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) made five saves and Xavier's goalkeeper Colin Hanley made four saves. The Friars and Musketeers each tallied eight shots.

Neither team converted in the second half forcing the game into overtime. The Friars registered nine shots in the half including Brendan Reardon's (Nesconset, N.Y.) shot that rang off the post in the 84th minute. Miller made two saves in the second half. The Friars also held the advantage in corner kicks (8-3) through 90 minutes.

A pair of freshmen combined for the game-winning goal with 1:59 remaining in the first overtime period. Braden Kline (Lancaster, Pa.) crossed the ball through the box to Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.). Griffin one-timed the ball into the lower left corner of the net and secured the Friar win.

Griffin's goal marks his fourth goal of the season, each serving as game-winning tallies.

The Friars finished the game with 23 shots and Miller made six saves over 98 minutes of play.

Providence will play at Brown for a non-conference match up at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
