PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's hockey's sophomore goaltender Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 10 in an announcement made by league. Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) was named a Hockey East Top Performer.
Myers posted consecutive shutouts to help the Friars to their first two wins of the 2016-17 season and their first weekend sweep, defeating RIT, 7-0 on Oct. 7 and 3-0 on Oct. 8.
The sophomore goaltender tallied 24 saves on Oct. 7 and 33 saves on Oct. 8, turning aside 57 shots over the two games. Myers also aided in killing off 16 penalties in the series.
Carels collected four points on the weekend, registering one goal and three assists over the two game series. On Oct. 7, Carels scored one goal and added two assists. In the Friars 3-0 win on Oct. 8, Carels added another assist to push her team lead in points to eight (4-4-8).
The Friars are back in action on Oct. 15 at Schneider Arena, facing off against the Union College Dutchwomen.
