Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 20-25) decision against Seton Hall in a BIG EAST Conference contest at Alumni Gym on Oct. 14. The Friars fall to a 12-11 (0-7) record while Seton Hall improves to 10-11 (4-4).
The first set went back and forth with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage until late in the set. Seton Hall took a 23-20 lead on a kill by freshman Haylee Gasser forcing Providence to use a timeout. The visiting Pirates closed out the set when a kill by freshman Maggie Cvelbar led to the 25-22 victory and a 1-0 advantage for the match. Senior Dani Schroeder paced Seton Hall in the first set with six kills while freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) notched six kills and four digs in the set for Providence. Seton Hall hit for a .304 (19 kills, 5 errors, 46 attempts) hitting percentage while Providence was also impressive, hitting .311 (16 kills, 2 errors, 45 attempts) for the set.
It was another battle in the second set as the teams traded leads throughout before Providence took 20-17 lead after a kill from senior Abigail Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.). The host Friars then capped off the set with a kill by senior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) to take the 25-22 win in the set and knot the match at 1-1. Alderson and freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) each tallied five kills for PC as the Friars hit a remarkable .341 (19 kills, 5 errors, 41 attempts) in the second set.
The third set saw Seton Hall race out to the early 9-4 lead, capped by a kill by sophomore Caitlin Koska to force a timeout by Providence. The Pirates extended their lead to 16-8 after a Friars miscue. Seton Hall led by as many as ten points (19-9) after a kill by Schroeder before cruising to the 25-15 win and the 2-1 advantage for the match. Sophomore Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) had three kills for PC in the set while Schroeder recorded five kills for Seton Hall. The Pirates hit for a .296 percentage (14 kills, 6 errors, 27 attempts) to secure the win in the set.
In the fourth set Seton Hall held the 14-10 advantage after a service ace by junior Sarah Kenneweg. The Pirates had the 17-11 lead after a Friar hitting error, forcing another timeout. Seton Hall then took the set by a 25-20 score, capped by a kill by senior Tessa Fournier to close out the set and the 3-1 win for the match. Alderson notched four kills for PC while Schroeder had five kills for Seton Hall in the fourth set.
Leading the way for Providence was Alderson with 16 kills and nine digs while Impellizeri added 14 kills for the Friars. Junior Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) tallied 47 set assists, eight kills and two digs while sophomore Kara Mason recorded a team-best 10 digs in the setback for Providence.
Seton Hall was paced by Schroeder with 18 kills, three digs and two blocks while sophomore Sophia Coffey had 32 assists in the win for the Pirates.
In upcoming action, Providence will host St. John's on Sunday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m. while Seton Hall travels to Creighton on Sunday, October 16 at 1:00 p.m.
