PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted their first home meet of the 2016-17 season on Oct. 21 in Providence, R.I. against the Bryant University Bulldogs. Impressive times were posted by the Friars for both the women and the men, but the Bulldogs ultimately triumphed with scores of 183-114 and 184-104, respectively.

Senior Helen Smith (Belmont, Mass.) lowered the school record in the 200-meter backstroke to 2:20.26, which she previously held at 2:20.99, en route to her first place finish in that event. Smith would touch the wall first in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:05.87. She also raced in the 200-meter medley relay alongside teammates Abigail Czerniecki (Haddonfield, N.J.), Paige DeLago (Norwalk, Conn.), and Kelly Quinn (Garden City, N.Y.) and in the and in the 400-meter freestyle relay with Quinn, Mary McKenna (Wethersfield, Conn.), and Katherine Fallon (Warren, N.J.). Both relays placed second.

Fallon earned a decisive victory in the 400-meter freestyle (4:34.18), topping the field by nearly four seconds.

Sophomore Madeline Snow (Bethany, Conn.) took first place in the 200-meter butterfly (2:29.96) and DeLago earned first in the 100-meter butterfly (1:07.02).

Freshman Patrick Brannigan (Darien, Conn.) broke the school record in the 50-meter freestyle with his time of 24.11. The previous record was set by Matthew Card in 2010 at 24.41. The time was enough for Brannigan to finish in first place.

Ryan Trammell (Lake Mary, Fla.) also found himself breaking a Providence College record in his second place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke. Trammell's personal best time of 2:29.25 topped the previous record of 23 years set by Jeff Longo 2:30.11 set in 1993.

Other top finishes from the Friars came from Jonathan Batista (Southboro, Mass.) in the 200-meter backstroke (2:10.80) and Jacob Griffin (South Portland, Maine) in the 100-meter butterfly (59.98).

The Providence College Friars return to the pool in South Orange, N.J. on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they face off against the Seton Hall Pirates.
