CHICAGO, ILL. - The Providence College men's soccer team defeated BIG EAST foe DePaul, 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Chicago, Ill. It marks the fifth-consecutive victory for Providence, who improves to 9-5 overall, including a 4-2 mark in conference action. DePaul drops to 7-6-2 (2-4 BIG EAST) with the loss.
Freshman Liam Wilson (Sussex, England) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute. Wilson collected a feed from senior Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) during a corner kick and drove it past the Blue Demon's goalkeeper. It marked Wilson's first career goal, while Gressel was credited with the assist.
Gressel put the Friars ahead, 2-0, in the 51st minute as he converted a penalty kick for his team-best ninth goal of the year.
DePaul scored its lone goal of the game in the 87th minute as Simon Megally found the lower left hand corner of the net, unassisted, for his seventh tally of the year.
The Blue Demons held a slight edge in shots during the game (14-13) and also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Red-shirt sophomore goalkeeper Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) finished the day with six saves for Providence. Quentin Low registered three saves for DePaul.
Providence's Gressel finished the game with one goal and one assist for three points, moving his season total to nine goals and four assists for 22 points. He eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time in his career with the Friars. His previous single-season career high in points was 18 (2015).
The Friars' five-game win streak is the program's longest since notching six-straight victories at the tail end of the 2014 season, leading to the BIG EAST Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA College Cup Semifinals.
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 26 against BIG EAST foe Marquette. The match will be played on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. and kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Prior to the match, the program will hold its annual senior ceremony.
