Final Stats

OMAHA, NEB. - The Providence College men's soccer team defeated 18th-ranked Creighton, 1-0, on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Omaha, Neb. The Friars improve to 11-5 overall, including a 6-2 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence also handed the Bluejays their first loss at Morrison Stadium this season, having entered the match with a 6-0-2 mark at home. Creighton drops to 8-5-3 overall (5-3 BIG EAST).

The win over Creighton assures the Friars at least a share of the BIG EAST Regular-Season title and a bye into the semifinal-round of the BIG EAST Championship, which Providence will have the opportunity to host as one of the top-two teams in the final standings.

Additionally, the win is the first over a nationally-ranked opponent since Oct. 10, 2015, when the Friars defeated then-No. 24 Xavier, 3-0, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Providence took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute as sophomore Brendan Constantine (Glastonbury, Conn.) intercepted a ball and that got into the box. After a scramble directly in front of the Bluejays goalkeeper, senior Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) collected a loose ball and directed it into the back of the net. It marked Gressel's team-best 10th goal of the season, and keeps him in second place among BIG EAST players in goals scored during the 2016 campaign.

Creighton held a 9-4 advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes of play. Just two of the Bluejays' attempts were on frame, but each was turned away by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.). Gressel proved to be a handful in the opening half, as he attempted three of the Friars' four shots.

In the 52nd minute, redshirt junior Brendan Reardon (Nesconset, N.Y.) rifled a shot off the crossbar that could have provided a two-goal cushion for the Friars.

Miller kept the clean sheet by turning away a shot-attempt from the Bluejays with under a minute remaining on the clock. He finished the match with three saves to record his sixth shut-out victory of the season. Miller is now 10-0 on the season and has played a critical role in the Friars' current seven-game win streak.

The Friars will conclude the regular-season schedule on Thursday, Nov. 3 against St. John's in Queens, N.Y. The Red Storm are currently 6-6-4 overall and sitting in eighth place in the BIG EAST standings. Providence can capture the BIG EAST Regular-Season title, outright, with a win or a tie against St. John's.
