PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College women's hockey team defeated the Merrimack College Warriors, 3-2, on Dec. 9 at Schneider Arena. The Friars finish the first half of the season with an overall record of 9-10-1 and a 5-6-1 Hockey East record, while Merrimack moves to 6-14-2 and 2-11-0 in Hockey East.
Merrimack jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first period at 10:54 from Allison Sexton.
Providence evened the score in the second period, when Neve Van Pelt (Mitchell, Ontario) scored her first collegiate goal at 14:22. Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) forced a turnover deep in the offensive zone and passed to an open Van Pelt in the slot, who one-timed it home.
Merrimack took back the lead less than three minutes into the third period when Mikyla Grant-Mentis scored, putting the Friars down, 2-1.
The Friars scored two goals in the third period to win the game, 3-2. At 4:29 of the third period Carels scored after batting a feed from Lauren Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) out of midair and the roofed the puck to even the score at 2-2.
Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ontario) scored her eleventh goal of the season on an unassisted short-handed tally at 11:25 of the third. Boquist forced a turnover in the neutral zone and skated into offensive territory, deked Merrimack's Lea-Kristine Demers, and backhanded the puck home to put the Friars up, 3-2.
Providence and Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) held off the Warriors for the remainder of the game with Myers making 30 saves.
The Friars will be back in action on Jan. 6 in Ithaca, N.Y. for a non-conference series against Cornell.
