PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Georgetown, 1-0 on Sept. 17. The Friars move to 4-3 (0-1 BIG EAST) while the Hoyas improve to 2-5 (1-0 BIG EAST).
After a scoreless first half, the Friars led the Hoyas in shots (8-4) and shots on goal (4-1). Providence also held the advantage in corners with six to Georgetown's zero.
The Friars best chance came just over two minutes into the game when Braden Kline (Lancaster, Pa.) received a feed from Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) for a wide open shot, stopped by Georgetown's JT Marcinkowski.
Georgetown was awarded a free kick just outside the 18 yard box on the right side and Christopher Lema crossed the ball to Brett Campbell. Campbell headed the ball past Ben Seguljic (Rye Brook, N.Y.) for a 1-0 Hoya lead.
Providence sustained offensive pressure, especially in the final 10 minutes of play but was unable to convert.
Seguljic made four saves while JT Marcinkowski notched eight and claimed his second shutout of the 2016 season. The Friars outshot the Hoyas, 16-11, and had more corner kicks (8-5).
The 1-0 loss is the first time the Friars have been held scoreless in the 2016 season.
Providence is back in action on Sept. 24 at Butler at 7:00 p.m. in Indianapolis, Ind. for their first road BIG EAST match.
