Men's Swimming Takes Down Maine on Senior Day

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College Swimming and Diving teams hosted the University of Maine Black Bears today, Jan. 27, at Taylor Natatorium. This was the last home meet of the season, and Senior Day. The team recognizes the senior class for their devotion to the program during their careers at Providence College. From the Men's team: Patrick Boyle, Austin McGowan, Charlie Sabaitis, and George Thompson. From the Women's team: Divers, Molly Anthony and Kendall Jerzyk, and Swimmers, Megan Collins, Erin Cunningham, Katherine Fallon, Hayley McClure, and Bridget Reilly.

The school's split the meet, with the Providence Men taking down the Black Bears 177-111, while the Maine women came out on top with a score of 161.5-133.5.

Jerod Magazine helped kick off the dominating performance for the Friars Men as he took first place in the 800-meter freestyle (8:48.71), beating the closest competitor by over 20 seconds. Magazine went on to win the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:14.95.

Following Magazine's winning start, Sebastian Melendez refused to be beaten today. Melendez took first place in all of his events today including the 200-meter freestyle (1:57.09), the 100-meter freestyle (53.48), and the 100-meter butterfly (59.04). He finished the day by leading off the 200-meter freestyle relay team where he was joined by Charlie Sabaitis, Joshua Southren, and Patrick Brannigan to bring home another first place finish for the Friars (1:38.12).

On the women's side, the Seniors led the way. Once again, Kendall Jerzyk was dominant on the diving boards. She took first in both the 1-meter (265.42) and the 3-meter (267.15) dive.

Katherine Fallon continued her winning streak from last weekend, as she was undefeated in both of her individual events today. She started the day with first place finish in the 200-meter freestyle (2:10.43), and went on to earn another nine points for the Friars with her performance in the 400-meter freestyle (4:34.84).

Today's meet concludes the 2017-18 Providence College Swimming and Diving home schedule. The Friars jump back into action next Saturday, Feb. 3, as they travel to New Jersey for a tri-meet with Seton Hall and Georgetown.
