BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Providence College women's hockey team dropped the opening game of a two-game road series against the Vermont Catamounts, 4-3, on Saturday, January 4. The Friars fought back from a 3-0 deficit but failed to find the equalizer late in the third period.

-Vermont took a 1-0 lead 13:53 into the opening period.
Bailey Burton (xxx) sent Providence to its first penalty kill after being called for hooking. Theresa Schafzahl finished a wrist shot on the power play for an early advantage.
- The Catamounts held an 11-7 advantage in shots in the first period while
Clare Minnerath (Sartell, Minn.) tallied 10 saves.
- Vermont scored two goals in the opening six minutes of the middle stanza to build a 3-0 advantage. Maude Poulin-Labelle and Kristina Shanahan were the goal scorers for the Catamounts.

Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) cut the deficit to 3-1 with 8:11 remaining in the second period. Hjalmarsson slid the puck towards the front of the net that snuck in the near post for her team-high ninth goal of the season.
Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) was credited with the assist giving her six goals and six assists on the season.
- Theresa Schafzahl scored her second goal of the game three minutes later to give Vermont a 4-1 lead at the second intermission. Kristina Shanahan found Schafzahl on the back post for a tap-in goal.
- Providence and Vermont were even with 18 shots a side entering the third period.

Annelise Rice (Excelsior, Minn.) scored her second goal of the season to bring the Friars within two, 4-2, 3:27 into the third period.
Kathleen McHugh (Billerica, Mass.) dished the puck to Rice who finished a wrist shot on the edge of the left circle, beating the goaltender glove side.
- The Friars fought back to make it a 4-3 game with 48 seconds remaining on
Whitney Dove's (Port Moody, British Columbia) seventh goal of the season.
Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) slid the puck over to Dove at the left point who one-timed a slap shot to the top right corner.
- Sanda Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) relieved Minnerath between the pipes midway through the second period.
- Providence failed to convert on four power play opportunities while Vermont went 1-3 with an extra skater.
