Field Hockey Upsets No. 5 Connecticut, 3-2, In Double-Overtime

Bo Martina nets game-winning goal with 6:06 left in second overtime.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team up upset No. 5 Connecticut, 3-2, in double-overtime during BIG EAST regular-season action on Oct. 18 in Providence, R.I. Bo Martina scored the game-winning goal with 6:06 left in the second overtime and goalkeeper Asia Porter recorded the victory in the cage with five saves.
 
GAME FLOW:
• UConn got on the board first at the 10:30 mark as Juul Sauer converted from the left side of the circle during a penalty corner. Sol Simone was credited with the assist on the insert.
• Providence tied the game just over a minute later (11:46). Celia Preveza tallied the goal after collecting a rebound off an initial shot during a corner.
• The Huskies regained the lead as time expired in the first quarter (2-1). Julia Bressler scored the goal on a direct shot during a penalty corner, assisted by Simone and Juana Garcia.
• The second quarter was scoreless for both teams and UConn carried a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Ally DeCoste scored the only goal of the third quarter to level the game for the Friars at 2-2. She converted the goal off a deflection from Cami Crook's feed to the cage during a penalty corner at 36:53.
• The teams were scoreless in the fourth quarter, leading to overtime tied, 2-2. 
• Neither team registered a shot attempt in the first overtime and the game remained tied, 2-2.
• Martina ended the game with a reverse stick effort from the right side of the circle with 6:06 remaining in the second overtime.

 

NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Martina recorded her fourth goal of the season and second game-winning goal of the year.
• DeCoste tallied her team-best sixth goal of the season.
• Preveza's goal marked her second of the season. It also was first goal that Connecticut surrendered during BIG EAST Conference play.
• Porter earned the victory in net with five saves. UConn goalkeeper Natalie McKenna recorded one save.
• The Friars' three goals are the second most scored against Connecticut this season. 
• Providence improved to 2-0 in overtime games this season. The Friars previously defeated Holy Cross in a 2OT/shootout, 4-3, on Sept. 22.
• The victory over No. 5 UConn marks the Friars' first victory over a top-5 team in the national rankings since 2009. That season, Providence defeated No. 4 Princeton, 2-1, in Providence, R.I.
• Providence has recorded consecutive victories over UConn for the first time since the 1990 season. The Friars defeated Connecticut last season, 2-1, in double-overtime in Storrs, Conn. During the 1990 season, the Friars earned a 1-0 victory in Storrs, Conn. and a 2-0 victory in the BIG EAST Tournament.
• The Friars' three goals in Friday's victory are the most the program has scored against UConn since 2006. That season, Providence fell to Connecticut, 4-3, in the BIG Championship Game.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will be on the road for their next two games, beginning with a trip to Washington, D.C. on Friday, Oct. 25 to face BIG EAST foe Georgetown at Noon. On Sunday, Oct. 27 the Friars will travel to Brown for a non-conference match against the Bears at 3:00 p.m.
