Friar women place three runners in the top 10 and qualify for NCAA Championship for fifth consecutive year and 33rd time in program history.

HOPKINTON, N.H. – The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the NCAA Northeast Regional race on Friday, November 14 in Hopkinton, N.H. The Friar women's squad placed three runners in the top-10, scored 71 points and finished second of 37 teams on 6k course.  The top two teams in each NCAA Region earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, which will be held on November 22 in Columbia, Missouri.  Sophomore Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Northern Ireland) was the top Friar women's finisher, placing sixth in a time of 20:04.2.  On the men's side, the Friars placed fourth of 38 teams on the 10k course after scoring 159 points.  Sophomore Ryan LoCicero (Bloomfield, N.J.) was the top finisher for the Friar men's team, placing 23rd in a time of 30:06.5.

"I'm delighted the women have earned a berth at the NCAA Championship for the 33rd time in 37 years by running their best race of the season," Friar Head Coach Ray Treacy said. "It's a fantastic achievement to have that in our program.  The men's team, they also ran their best race of the season and to finish fourth against this strong competition is a good achievement.  I'm delighted with both teams today."
 
The Friar women, who will be making their fifth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championship and 33rd overall, had two other runners finish in the top 10.  Senior Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) followed Gardiner, as she was seventh (20:11.3).  Sophomore Gabby Schmidt (Brisbane, Australia) also had a strong race, placing ninth (20:15.6).  Rounding out the scoring for the Friars was senior Níamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) (24th, 20:32.9) and freshman Kate Currie (Christchurch, New Zealand) (25th, 20:34.3).
 
Gardiner, Laverty, Schmidt, O'Mahony and Currie all earned NCAA All-Northeast Region honors by finishing in the top 25.

After LoCicero, freshman Oliver Neate (Sydney, Australia) (32nd, 30:18.9), sophomore Elliott Pugh (Tauranga, New Zealand) (33rd, 30:19.6), senior Daniel Prescott (Christchuch, New Zealand) (39th, 30:23.7) and sophomore Liam McCay (Liverpool, England) (42nd, 30:26.0) also scored for the Friar men's squad.
 
LoCicero earned NCAA All-Northeast Region honors by finishing in the top 25.
