Field Hockey Set To Open 2025 Season At Boston University

The Friars and Terriers will square off in Boston, Mass. on Aug. 29 at 11:00 a.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will open the 2025 season on Friday, Aug. 29 against Boston University. It marked the second-consecutive season that the Friars and Terriers open the season against one another. The match will be played at New Balance Field in Boston, Mass. and is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. A live stream will be available on ESPN+.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR:
• Boston University defeated Providence, 3-0, in the 2024 season opener on Aug. 30 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. 
• Both teams recorded 10 shots in the game, but BU had an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Terriers outshot the Friars 5-1 in the first quarter, but Providence held a 9-5 advantage in shots attempts the rest of the way.
• The Friars recorded a 9-4 edge in penalty corners. Boston University scored two of their three goals off corners.
• The Terriers jumped on the scoreboard 2:07 into the match as Tess Csejka scored, unassisted, off a rebound. BU tacked on two more goals in the fourth quarter, including the team's third goal, which was tallied on an empty net during a penalty corner after Providence pulled its goalkeeper in favor of an extra attacker.
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE (0-0):
• Providence College finished the 2024 season with a 7-10 overall record.
• The Friars posted a 3-4 mark in the BIG EAST Conference and finished sixth in the league's final standings. 
• Three of the Friars' four losses in league play were decided by one goal at the hands of No. 14 Liberty (2-1), No. 20 Temple (1-0) and Villanova (3-2).
• Providence was picked to finish sixth in the 2025 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
• Junior midfielder Bo Martina and junior defender Macie Pennisi were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Martina was one of three unanimous selections to the 13-player team. The duo finished in the top three on the team in scoring last season.
• Martina earned All-BIG EAST First Team and NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region First-Team honors in 2024. She played all 17 games with 16 appearances in the starting line-up. She led the Friars in points (18) and assists (eight) and added five goals. Nine of her 18 points came during BIG EAST regular-season action on three goals and three assists. Martina was a three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection in 2024.
• Pennisi started all 17 games for the Friars in 2024 and finished third on the team in scoring (12 points) on five goals and two assists. She established single-season career highs in goals and points. She was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24, 2024 and was featured on the NFHCA Division I Watch List ahead of last season.
• The Friars lost 11 players to graduation last season, including six seniors and five graduate students. 
• Providence will look to replace goalkeeper Asia Porter, who started all 74 games spanning the last five seasons. She posted a 2.23 goals against average and a 0.710 save percentage during her career and notched nine shutouts.
• Candidates to replace Porter include senior Zoe Onken, who has seen action in three career games. The Friars also could look to keep a Porter in goal for the sixth-consecutive season as Asia's sister, Ava, joins the Friars' goalkeeping unit as a freshman.
• Providence returns 13 players from last year's team, which features two seniors, seven juniors and four sophomores. Eight freshman join the roster in 2025.
• The Friars will play their first two games on the road this season, before returning to Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. to play seven-straight games.
 
BOSTON UNIVERSITY (0-0):
• Boston University is coming off of a 6-11 season in 2024, including a 3-3 mark in the Patriot League.
• Boston University was selected fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, behind defending champion Lafayette, as the unanimous pick to win the league, American and Bucknell.
• Martu Coulo and Nicole Lauro were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.
• Coulo is a three-time All-Patriot League selection, earning First-Team honors in 2024. She enters her senior year with 20 career points on six goals and eight assists.
• Lauro was a Second-Team selection last season. She has recorded five goals and three assists during her first two seasons at BU.
• The Terriers lost four of their top-five scorers from a season ago, who combined to score 43 points on 18 goals and seven assists. As a team, BU totaled 26 goals and 26 assists for 78 points.
• Natalie Epperson is BU's top returning scorer, having recorded eight points on four goals.
• Megan Wetzel returns as the team's top distributor, having recorded a team-best seven assists in 2024.
• The Terriers will look to replace starting goalkeeper Kate Thomason, who posted a 2.36 goals against average and a 0.721 save percentage. Junior Sophie Ortyl, who played just 60 minutes of action last season, is the only goalkeeper with collegiate experience. She is joined by sophomore Abbey Chun and freshman Anna Wilson.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will travel to Worcester, Mass. to face Holy Cross in non-conference play on Friday, Sept. 5. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
