PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced today (April 2) that Providence College sophomore guard
Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) will return to Friartown for his junior season. Mela is the first player slated for new Friar Head Coach
Bryan Hodgson's 2026-27 roster.
"We are excited that
Ryan Mela will be returning to Providence College next season," Head Coach
Bryan Hodgson said. "Having watched Ryan play, it was evident that he has shown consistent improvement over his first 60 games at PC. He also displayed a toughness and passion that we were attracted to. We felt he embodied the character and discipline that we are looking for in building our roster for the 2026-27 season. Most importantly, it says a lot about Providence College, this city, and this fanbase, to be able to retain a player of Ryan's caliber."
In his first two seasons at Providence, Mela played in 62 games. He started 31 of the 62 games. In those 62 games, he averaged 8.3 points and 5.3 rebounds.
In 2025-26, Mela played in all 33 of the team's games and made 22 starts. He averaged 9.9 points and 5.3 rebounds. Mela had a very productive two-game stint in the 2026 BIG EAST Tournament where he averaged 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds as the Friars posted a 1-1 mark. He also recorded a career-high 23 points on a 10-14 effort from the field versus Butler on March 11 in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament.
As a freshman, Mela was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team after he averaged 6.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in 29 games. He was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week twice and posted season-highs of 18 points versus DePaul on March 5, 2025, and 15 rebounds against Butler on Jan. 8, 2025.
