Providence College Volleyball Clinches Ocean State Cup Title For Second-Straight Season After Completing Tournament With 3-0 Win Over URI

KINGSTON R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team (5-1) defeated Rhode Island University (3-3) in straight sets (3-0) on Sunday, Sept. 6, to secure the Ocean State Cup and cap off an undefeated weekend of play against Brown, Bryant and URI.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Friars took set one, 25-19

  • Senior Shea Dupuis (Richardson, Texas) and freshman Aubrey Easterwood (Dallas, Texas) teamed up for a block at the net to tie the set, 4-4. 
  • The Friars pulled ahead with a 6-2 scoring run (10-6). 
  • Rhode Island fought back, but Providence maintained its lead (14-11).
  • Providence got out to a 20-16 lead before Rhode Island took its first timeout. 
  • A service ace from Sarah Musial helped grow Providence's lead 22-18, forcing a second timeout by the Rams.  
  • A block by Easterwood and Dupuis closed out the set (25-19). 

SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence commanded set two (25-14) to take a 2-0 lead in the match

  • Sophmore Tori Otter (Rogers, Ark.) tied the match, 6-6, with a kill. 
  • The Rams fell behind by three following a kill from senior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas). 
  • The Friars went on a 10-0 run to claim a 12-point advantage (24-12). 
  • An attack error by Rhode Island gave Providence their second win of the match (25-14). 

THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars swept the match (3-0) with a 25-19 win in set three. 

  • Providence led the set 6-4 after a kill by Senior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas).
  • Senior Miller McDonald (Dallas, Texas) equalized the score (11-11) after a kill. 
  • The Rams got within one (16-15) late in the match.
  • Rhode Island took its first timeout after the Friars took a three-point lead (19-16).
  • The Friars extended their lead by five, forcing the Rams to take their second timeout. 
  • Junior Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) closed out the set (25-19) and match (3-0) with a kill. 

MATCH NOTES:

  • Otter had a match-high of 11 kills. 
  • Berry had a dominant performance at the net with a .600 hitting percentage. She recorded seven kills on 10 total attempts.
  • Ava Dyer (Fort Worth, Texas) and McDonald each recorded double-digit digs with 14 and 11, respectively. 
  • Dyer registered double-digit digs in two of three matches at the Ocean State Cup.
  • The Friars notched 47 kills against the Rams.
  • Providence held URI to a .086 hitting percentage.
  • Easterwood, Miller and Otter were awarded a spot on the Ocean State Cup All-Tournament Team.   

WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars return to action next weekend (Sep. 11-12) to host the 21st Annual Friar Classic at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
