Providence, R.I. - Freshman midfielder Kyle McAuley (Trumbull, Connecticut) scored the lone goal of the game and senior goalkeeper Shayna Ross (Whitman, Mass.) made it stand up as the Providence College Friars upset the Villanova Wildcats, 1-0, in BIG EAST women's soccer action Friday afternoon.
The win was the Friars' second in a row and improved them to 5-8-0 on the year. The loss was the second in a row for Villanova as the Wildcats fall to 11-5-0 on the season.
McAuley took a pass from Melissa Crowley (Jr., Duxbury, Mass.) and beat Villanova goalkeeper Janel Schillig from 15-yards out at the 2:50 mark of the first half for the first goal of her collegiate career and the game winner.
The Friars then held off Villanova over the final 87 minutes as they were outshot by a 16-7 margin in the game. Ross picked up her fourth shutout of the season and the ninth of her career by making six saves in the game. Schillig made four stops in goal for Villanova.
The two-game winning streak is the first for the Friars since the 1994 season when PC was 8-11-1.
The Friars now take to the road for a three-game road swing beginning on Tuesday, October 19th at Holy Cross.
