DENVER, Colo. -- Providence College opened its season for the first time ever in a tournament and came away with a 2-1 win against the University of Notre Dame in the first game at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Denver, Colo. on Friday, Oct. 15. For the Friars, it was their first meeting ever against the Fighting Irish, a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

Notre Dame held a 10-5 shot advantage in an evenly played first period. Each team had one power-play opportunity in the first, but neither team was able to capitalize.

The Friars got the on the board during a flurry of action in the ninth minute of the second period. Freshman Peter Fregoe pounced on a rebound of Fernando Pisani's shot during a power-play at 9:28 and snapped in a shot. Twenty nine seconds after Fregoe got the Friars on the board, sophomore Marc Suderman broke in on the left side and rifled a low shot under UND sophomore goaltender Jeremiah Kimento to put the Friars ahead, 2-0. The Fighting Irish quickly cut into the Friars' lead when senior Tyson Fraser blasted a shot from the left point through a screen on a five-on-three power play at 10:21 of the second period.

The Friar defense, led by the strong play of Ballard in net, held the Fighting Irish scoreless in third. Ballard finished the game with 30 saves and earned the game's No. 1 star. Kimento made 16 stops for Notre Dame.

With the win, Providence raised its record to 1-0 overall while Notre Dame fell to 0-3.

The Friars will return to action on Saturday against the winner of the Denver versus Union game for the Championship of the Ice Breaker Tournament at 6:05 or 9:35 EST.
