PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the University of Pittsburgh, 1-0, in men's BIG EAST soccer action at Providence, R.I. on Saturday, October 2.
PC junior Kevin Jones (Westford, Mass.) provided the only goal of the game as he broke down the left side after taking a pass from junior Matt O'Toole (Norwell, Mass.) and chipped a low shot past Pittsburgh goalkeeper freshman Justin Gaul (Huntington Valley, Pa.) at the 52:12 mark.
Pittsburgh senior back Jeff Dyer (McMurray, Pa.) almost converted on the Panthers' best opportunity of the game when he headed a shot off the crossbar with nine seconds remaining in the contest.
PC sophomore goalkeeper Danny Glynn (Manchester, England) recorded nine saves to earn his first shutout of the season. Gaul made two stops in loss.
With the win, Providence improved to 4-4-1 overall and 3-3 in the BIG EAST, while Pittsburgh fell to 3-5-2 overall and 0-4-1 in league play.
Providence College returns to action on Tuesday, October 5 against Brown at PC's Glay Field at 3:30 p.m.
