OXFORD, Ohio. -- Trailing 3-2 entering the third period, the Providence College men's hockey team got three unanswered goals to earn a 5-3 win against the University of Miami Red Hawks on Friday, Oct. 22 at Oxford, Ohio. PC used strong special teams play to help in the win as the Friars netted three of their five goals on the power play
Providence jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Josh MacNevin sent a pass to Nick Lent at the left corner of the net who stuffed it past Miami netminder Andy Marsch at 10:41 of the first period during the team's second power-play opportunity of the game. Miami evened the game during a power-play as Dustin Whitecotton one-timed a shot from four feet in front of the net that found the back of the cage through PC netminder Boyd Ballard's legs with 56 seconds remaining in the first period.
The Red Hawks took their first lead of the game (2-1) at 5:58 of the first period as Pat Leahy wristed a in a rebound high over Ballard into the top right corner of the net. Miami's Jeremy Bautch backhanded a shot past Ballard at 11:19 of the second to give the Red Hawks a two-goal cushion. The Friars got within one goal at 16:29 when Fernando Pisani blasted a shot from the left point that Doug Sheppard redirected into the goal during a power play.
PC evened the game at 3-3 with a wrist shot from the left point by Matt Libby that beat Marsch high to the blocker side at 3:20 of the third period. Cranston's Jason Ialongo regained the lead for the Friars with a blast from the right point during a five-on-three power play at 7:26 of the third period. PC's Fernando Pisani tallied an empty net goal at 19:35 to seal the victory for the Friars.
With the win, Providence raised its record to 2-1 overall while Miami fell to 3-1-1.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday in the second game of a two-game series against Miami University at 7:00 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio.
