Providence, R.I. - Providence College volleyball standout Sarah Katinger (So., Stratford, Conn.) has been named the BIG EAST's Player of the Week for the week ending November 14th. In two league contests, Katinger helped the Friars to a pair of victories.
On Saturday, November 13th, the sophomore outside hitter led the Friars to a 3-1 win (15-10, 15-9, 5-15, 15-13) at Pittsburgh. In that game, Katinger had a game high 26 kills with seven errors in 62 attempts for a .306 hitting mark plus 13 digs.
On Sunday afternoon at West Virginia, Katinger led Providence to a 3-0 win (15-11, 15-11, 15-8). Versus WVU, Katinger had a .273 hitting percentage with ten kills, four errors and 22 chances. She also led the Friars with 17 digs. For the weekend, she recorded 36 kills, 11 errors and 84 chances for a .298 hitting percentage. She also had 30 digs.
On the season, the former Bunnell High School performer leads Providence College with 482 kills in 1300 total attempts. Her .234 hitting percentage is tops on the team. Her 4.97 kills per game is tops in the BIG EAST and ranks her 20th in the nation.
Katinger is second on the Friars' squad with 332 digs on the season and her 3.42 digs per game is sixth in the league.
The Stratford, Connecticut native and her teammates finished the regular season at 16-11 overall and were 8-3 in the BIG EAST. That gave the Friars a third place finish as they move on to the BIG EAST Tournament where they will face Syracuse, the sixth place team, on Friday, November 19th at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that match will face Georgetown at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday with the championship game set for Sunday, November 21st.
The BIG EAST volleyball tournament is being held this year at the University of Pittsburgh's Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.
