Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Sophomores Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) and Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, Ill.) combined for 32 of Providence College's 50 kills to lead the Friars to a 3-1 win over the Boston College Eagles Friday night at the Power Gym at BC.
The win moved the Friars one step closer to the BIG EAST Tournament as they improved to 14-10 overall, but 6-3 in league play which placed PC fourth in the standings. Six teams make the tournament with PC's last appearance coming in 1994. Boston College fell to 12-15 overall and 3-5 in league play.
The Friars have now won eight of their last nine matches and 12 of the last 15 since September 25th.
PC won the opener by a 15-9 margin only to see Boston College win the second contest, 15-10. The Friars then took control in the third game winning 15-9 and then clinched the win with a 15-12 victory in the fourth game.
Katinger paced the Friars with 20 kills and 20 digs on the night while recording a .230 hitting percentage. Cella had 12 kills and added 16 digs while PC's all-time assist leader Colleen Lee (Sr., Tonawanda, N.Y.) added 36 helpers to her career totals.
Boston College was paced by junior Kristen Sprinkel who had a career high 24 kills while making just five errors in 45 chances for a .422 hitting mark.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, November 7th when they travel crosstown to face Brown University in a non-league contest. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
