PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The prognosticators predicted it would be one of the closest matchups of the weekend as the Providence College Friars hosted the Merrimack Warriors in a HOCKEY EAST game at Schneider Arena on Friday, December 3. The game lived up to the billing as the Friars extended their winning streak to six straight games with a hard-fought 4-1 win over Merrimack.

The first period was very closely played, but the Friars got the edge when Peter Fregoe scored on a pretty play breaking down the right side to put PC ahead, 1-0. Fregoe moved around the defenseman and slipped the puck past Merrimack netminder Tom Welby with 22 seconds remaining in the period. After the goal an altercation occurred, which resulted in each team being assessed 57 minutes in penalties. PC also lost defenseman Mike Farrell and Merrimack lost Mike Rodrigues for the remainder of the game and Saturday's game with a disqualification penalties.

Both teams settled down in the second period, before the Friars increased their lead to 2-0 when Mike Lucci flipped a rebound over Welby at 7:04. The Warriors battled back and made it a one-goal game as Joey Gray stood at the edge of the crease and poked home a rebound of John Pyliotis' shot at the 14:16 mark of the second period.

The game remained close until 13:02 of the third period when Fernando Pisani stole the puck while killing a penalty and netted a short-handed tally to put the Friars ahead, 3-1. Pisani's goal gave the Friars the momentum over the final seven minutes of the contest. Lucci added his second goal of the night to increase PC's lead to 4-1 as he one-timed a shot past Welby from five feet in front of the net at 17:48 of the third.

Friar netminder Nolan Schaefer played strong in net for PC, recording 30 saves in his fourth win of the season. Welby had 29 stops for the Warriors.

With the win, Providence raised its record to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in HOCKEY EAST, while Merrimack fell to 6-7-1 overall and in 3-4-1 league play.

The same two teams will return to action on Saturday, December 4 at Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. at 7:00 p.m.
