NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Merrimack College defeated the Providence College Friars, 4-2, in HOCKEY EAST action at Volpe Arena in North Andover, Mass., on Saturday, December 4. The loss ended the Friars' season-high six game winning streak.

The Friars entered the game without the services of two of the team's top forwards. Friars Peter Fregoe and Jerry Keefe were both scratched from the lineup with leg injuries. The losses hurt the Friars as the team was never able to get its offense moving.

Merrimack held a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play on goals by Greg Clasen at 5:18 and Ryan Kiley at 11:11. Clasen netted the first goal of the contest when he took his own rebound and fired it between Friar netminder Nolan Schaefer and the post during a power play. The Friars failed to capitalize on several excellent scoring chances in first period, but eventually evened the game when Jon DiSalvatore took a feed after a face off and backhanded a shot past Merrimack goaltender Chris Classen at the 8:16 mark. However, the Warriors regained the lead after sloppy play by the Friar defense resulted in a turnover at PC's blueline that Ryan Kiley took advantage of as he blasted in a slap shot from the top of the right circle.

The second period was played very similar to the first 20 minutes of action with one Friar goal scored between two Merrimack tallies. The Warriors took a 3-1 lead when Anthony Aquino poked in a shot through a scrum at 5:04 of the second period. The Friars again battled back and got within one goal on DiSalvatore's second tally of the night. DiSalvatore stole the puck at the Merrimack blueline and slipped a low shot under Cris Classen at 5:55 of the second period. Sandy Cohen netted the Warrior's fourth goal of the game with a power-play tally at with 2:12 remaining in the second period.

Neither team was able to score in the third period as Schaefer and Cris Classen both played strong in net.

With the win, Merrimack raised its record to 7-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Providence fell to 8-7 overall and in 3-5 league play.

The Friars will return to action on Friday, December 10 against ECAC foe Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m. at PC's Schneider Arena.
