Men's Hockey Defeats BU, 8-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- After trailing 2-1 entering the third period, the Providence College Friars scored seven goals and earned an 8-2 win against Boston University in the first game of a best of three HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinal series on Friday, March 12 at PC's Schneider Arena. The Friars established two HOCKEY EAST Tournament records with their seven goal outburst in the third. PC broke the record for the fastest four goals in a period with four tallies in 3:06 and tied an established record with seven goals in a period.

The Terriers tallied the only goal of the first period when Joe DiPenta fired a shot from the right point that Carl Corazzini tipped past Friar netminder Boyd Ballard at 16:20 of the first period.

The Friars evened the game at 3:02 of the second period when Drew Omicioli fired in a rebound from the right side of the crease past BU goaltender Michel Larocque. The Terriers regained the lead on Corazzini's second goal of the game at 7:35 of the second period. Corazzini finished off a three-on-one break in by firing a high wrist shot over a sprawled Ballard.

Troy Lake got the Friar offense going in the third when he one timed a shot past Larocque at the 1:23 mark. Thirty four seconds later Matt Libby fired in a shot from the right point for what proved to be the game winner. Mike Omicioli blasted in a slap shot at 3:13 and Fernando Pisani scored on a break away at 4:29to establish the HOCKEY EAST Tournament record of the fastest four goals in a span of 3:06. The previous record was 4:34 set by UNH versus the Friars in 1990. Jon Coe added one goal and Doug Sheppard netted two at 12:49 and 18:01 to close out the scoring for PC.

Ballard played strong in net for PC, making 29 saves. Larocque and Jason Tapp combined to make 17 saves for the Terriers.

With the win, Providence improved to 19-15-1 overall , while Boston University fell to 13-19-3 overall.

Providence College will return to action against Boston University on Saturday, March 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of the best of three HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinal series at PC's Schneider Arena
