NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Providence College Friars entered Saturday's game against the Yale Bulldogs looking to end a four-game losing streak. With a three-goal outburst in the second period which proved to be the turning point in the game, the Friars went on to earn a 5-3 victory in men's hockey action at Yale's Ingalls Rink on Saturday, Nov. 28.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first when Keith Fitzpatrick broke down the right side and sent a pass across to the left where Christian Peterson one-timed a shot past Friar netminder Mark Kane at 4:50 of the first period. The Friars evened the game at 1-1 when Jerry Keefe made a nifty move in the right corner to get free and sent a centering pass to an open Doug Sheppard who snapped it high past Yale goalie Alex Westlund at 11:01 of the first.
The Friars took their first lead of the game on a rush down the right side by Jon Coe who beat the defenseman and wristed in a high shot at 4:02 of the second period. West Warwick's Mike Omicioli gave PC a two-goal cushion as he scored on a breakaway at 12:04 of the second. PC netted its third unanswered goal of the period on a power play when Troy Lake tipped a shot from the point by Cranston's Jason Ialongo at the 12:45 mark of the second.
Yale's Cory Shea broke the Friars' scoring string when he knocked in a rebound off of a two-on-one breakaway at 11:37 of the third. However, PC quickly regained the three-goal lead as Heath Gordon ripped in a rebound at 12:08. Yale's Ben Stafford added a power-play goal with 1:32 remaining in the game to cut Friars' lead to 5-3.
With the win, PC raised its record to 6-6 overall , while Yale fell to 2-4 overall .
