The Minutemen got on the scoreboard first when Jedd Crumb one timed a shot past Friar netminder Boyd Ballard to finish off a two-one-one break in at 13:35. UMass quickly added to its lead when Martin Miljko skated and blasted a slap shot that broke through Ballard into the net at 14:09 of the first period.
After a scoreless second period, the Friars got their first goal of the game when Josh MacNevin fired a puck from outside the blueline that deflected off UMass goalie Markus Helanen at the 6:19 mark. The Minutemen quickly regained the goal advantage when Nathan Sell was left all alone in front of the net to one time a shot past Ballard at the 8:23 mark.
With the win, UMass raised its record to 11-19-2 overall and 7-14-2 in HOCKEY EAST, while Providence fell to 18-14-1 overall and 12-10-1 in league standings.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, March 7 against Northeastern at Matthews Arena in Boston.
