New Hampshire (0-0-0): The two teams open the regular season this afternoon at Glay Field. A year ago, the Wildcats and Friars battled to a 1-1 overtime tie at Durham, New Hampshire. UNH looks to improve on a 3-15-2 overall record and returns its top three scorers in junior forward Kristin Cannistraro (3-1-7), junior midfielder Nicole Coupland (2-0-4) and senior midfielder Courtney Longua (2-0-4). Senior goalkeeper Lorien Snellings played in 19 games a year ago with a 2.24 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.
Providence: (0-0-0): The Friars open the regular season under new coach Joe Crehan who replaces Liz Wynn after two seasons. Crehan served as an assistant coach with the women's team last year when PC was 5-12-2. The Friars had six one-goal losses last year and will look to add to the 16 goals they scored. PC returns their top scorer in sophomore forward Melissa Crowley (6-1-13). Sophomore midfielder Jill Flanagan (1-2-4) is the next returning scorer.
A year ago, PC improved its overall defense, dropping from 87 goals against in 1996 to 38 last season. Much of that success was because of the play of All-BIG EAST candidate, junior goalkeeper Shayna Ross who played every minute of the season with a 1.91 goals against and a .829 save percentage. The defense is led by seniors Kelly Galligan and Lisa Zagura. PC is 3-9-1 in the all-time series with New Hampshire.
