Women's Hockey Defeats Cornell, 3-1

Providence, R.I.... --The eighth-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the Cornell University Big Red, 3-1 in women's hockey action, on January 29, at PC's Schneider Arena.

Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) scored the Friars first goal, at the 19:17 mark of the first period, on a pass from Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.). The game remained 1-0 until the third, when freshman Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) knocked in the game-winner, four minutes into the period, giving PC a 2-0 advantage.

At the 10:54 mark of the third, senior Stacy Kreger (Indianapolis, Ind.) notched her first goal of the season, on a low slap shot from the blue line, beating Cornell goalie Liz Connelly. Cornell's Erica Olson scored the Big Red's only goal, unassisted at 13:12.

Providence goaltender Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) recorded 21 saves in the victory, while Connelly turned away 24 shots for the Big Red.

Providence record stands at 14-5-3 overall, 8-4-3 in the ECAC, the Big Red drop to 6-11-1 overall, and 5-11-1 in the ECAC.

The Friars will return to action on Jan. 30 , when they host St. Lawrence, at 2:00 p.m.
