Women's Hockey Falls to 2nd Ranked Brown, 3-1

Providence, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars were defeated by the Brown University Bears 3-1, in women's ECAC hockey action on Saturday, February 5, at Brown's Meehan Auditorium.

The Friars caught an unlucky break at the 4:35 mark of the first period, as goaltender Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) broke her stick, while playing a puck behind the net. Brown's Courtney Johnson then took control of the puck and beat the stickless DeCosta, on a wrap around goal giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.

At 1:49 of the second, freshman Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) redirected a Jesscia Tabb (Holland, Mass.) shot, beating Brown's Ali Brewer, a power play goal, Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) also assisted on the play.

Brown notched the game-winner at 6:04 of the third, a power play goal, scored by Ali Kenney, assisted by Cara Gardner and Jordan Jiskra.

Kenney added an empty net goal at 19:12 of the third, her second goal of the day, assisted by Jiskra.

Brown's Brewer saved 26 shots in the win, while DeCosta recorded 40 saves in the loss.

With the win, Brown improves to 13-2-3 overall and 12-1-3 in league play, while Providence drops to 15-6-3 overall and 9-5-3 in ECAC action, while

Providence College will return to action at Harvard University, on Sunday, February 6, at 2:00 p.m.
