Providence, R.I. -- The Providence College Volleyball team defeated West Virginia University, 3-1 (15-8, 15-5, 10-15, 15-8) in BIG EAST action on Sunday, October 1, in Mullaney Gymnasium at Alumni Hall.
Junior Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) led the Friar attack with a game-high 23 kills and 20 digs. Fellow junior Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, Ill.) posted 18 kills and 17 digs, while senior Heidi Filippi (Wooster, Ohio) registered 12 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Susan Fanning (E. Amherst, N.Y.) handled 59 assists for PC.
West Virginia was paced by senior Adriana Hardy, who recorded 14 kills and 12 digs, and senior Jamie Boardman, who notched 14 kills and five digs for the Mountaineers.
Providence improved to 13-6 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST, while West Virginia dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Friars returns to action on Friday, October 6, when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on the Huskies of the University of Connecticut. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
