PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College volleyball team defeated cross-town rival Brown University on Tuesday night, 3-0, winning 15-6, 15-12 and 15-12 at Mullaney Gym.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) paced the Friars (15-8 overall) with a game-high 17 kills. Katinger added eight defensive digs and had a service ace in the victory. Classmate Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, Ill.) added 15 kills, seven digs and four blocks, while senior Deb Bihday (Warwick, R.I.) chipped in with 13 kills and three blocks.

The Friars won the first game of the match easily, 15-6, over Brown, and Providence was cruising in the second game, leading 10-4, when the Bears started a rally and took the lead 12-10. The two teams went back and forth before the Friars regained the momentum and the win, 15-12.

The third game was a battle between Brown and Providence, as the two teams were knotted at six all, eight all, and 12 before the Friars made their final surge to complete the three-game sweep.

The Bears were led by three players who reached double-figure kills. Sophomore Jessie Cooper (Tustin, Calif.) had team-high honors with 12 kills and added three blocks. Freshman Diane Schneider (Saratoga, Calif.) and sophomore Aneal Helms (Fallbrook, Calif.) each had 10 kills.

The Friars return to action at Mullaney Gym on Saturday, October 21st when they host BIG EAST rival Georgetown University at 2:00 p.m.
