PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College women's hockey coach Bob Deraney today announced that student-athletes Ashley Payton of Chesterfield, Mo. and Rush Zimmerman of Grosse Pt. Farms, Mich. each have signed a national letter of intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2001.
"We are excited about the addition of Ashley and Rush," Deraney said. "Both players are hard working, highly skilled athletes who will add size and strength to our line-up. Ashley and Rush will have an immediate impact on our program."
Payton, a 5-foot-10-inch, 150-pound forward, is in her senior year at prep school hockey powerhouse Shattuck St. Mary's in Faribault, Minn. This season, Payton has tallied 35 points (14 goals, 21 assists) in 20 games and has a plus/minus rating of 38. She was named MVP of Team Minnesota at the 1999 Hockey Night in Boston Tournament and participated in the 1999 Junior Olympic Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. During the 1999-00, season she notched 35 goals and 52 assists in 56 games with an impressive plus/minus rating of 114. Payton is the daughter of John and Betsy Payton.
Zimmerman, a 5-foot-11-inch, 165-pound forward, also is in her senior year at Shattuck St. Mary's. Currently, she has scored 19 goals and notched 13 assists in 20 games. Last season, Zimmerman recorded 66 points (38 goals, 28 assists) in 45 games with a plus/minus rating of 77. She is a two-time participant at the Junior Olympic Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. During the summer of 2000, Zimmerman was named as the top forward at Hockey Night in Boston Tournament. She is the daughter of Al and Deborah Zimmerman.
Zimmerman and Payton will join current freshman defenseman Meredith Roth as former Shattuck St. Mary's stars on the Friars' roster for 2001-02.
