ORONO, Maine -- Maine's Brendan Walsh scored at 11:48 of overtime as the Black Bears defeated Providence College, 5-4, in the second game of the HOCKEY EAST best-of-three Quarterfinal Series on Friday, March 10 at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Maine sweeps the Quarterfinal series, 2-0, and advances to the league's Semifinals at the FleetCenter in Boston.

The Friars got on the scoreboard first when Devin Rask took a feed across the goal mouth and wristed a shot high into the net at 7:18 of the first period. The Friars quickly increased their lead as Heath Gordon was left all alone in front of the net while on a power play and he sent a low shot by Maine goaltender Matt Yeats at the 8:56 mark. The Black Bears cut into the Friar lead late in the first period when Tom Reimann fired a low shot from the top of the circle that beat Friar netminder Boyd Ballard low to the glove side at the 17:43 mark.

PC regained the two-goal lead when Nick Lent scored on a breakaway with a low shot that deflected off Yeats' stick into the net at the 4:08 mark of the second period. Peter Metcalf brought the Black Bears within one goal when he wristed a shot from the left point through a screen that found the back of the net at 10:27 of the second period. Peter Fregoe finished off a breakaway for the Friars when he took a pass from Rask and one timed a shot past Yeats for PC's fourth goal of the game at the 16:15 mark of the second period.

The Black Bears got within one goal at the 7:47 mark of the third period when Chris Heisten poked in a shot through a scrum in front of the net. Maine evened the game at 4-4 when Lucas Lawson took a rebound off the end boards and wristed a shot high into the net past Ballard with 7:30 remaining in the game. The Friars had a number of chances to regain the lead in the closing minutes of the game as Yeats stopped PC on four breakaway attempts in the final seven minutes of the third period.

The two teams played evenly in overtime before Walsh threw a shot at the net from a bad angle that landed in the top left corner of the goal to give Maine the win.

With the win, improved to 24-7-5 overall, while Providence finished the season with a to 18-18-2 mark.
