PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Brian Gionta tallied two goals for the second-consecutive night as the second-ranked Boston College Eagles defeated the 10th-ranked Providence College Friars, 4-2, in HOCKEY EAST action on Saturday, January 20 at PC's Schneider Arena.

The Eagles scored the game's first goal at 16:44 of the first. BC's Marty Hughes fired a centering pass in front of the net that deflected off a Friar defender's stick past PC's goaltender Nolan Schaefer. Chuck Kobasew was credited with the power-play goal his 14th tally of the season.

Ben Eave's extended the Eagles lead to 2-0 at the 5:20 mark of the second period. At 11:49 of the second, Brian Gionta tallied his 16th goal of the season and his first of two goals in the game.

Providence freshman Cody Loughlean brought the Friars to within two goals as he notched the Friars' first tally of the night at 16:57 of the second. Loughlean's goal was the Friars' first goal against BC in over three games, dating back to January 22, 2000.

Gionta recorded his second goal of the night at 18:46 of the second period, and snapped the momentum back from the Friars.

The Friars again closed to within two goals at the 17:59 mark of the third period as Matt Libby registered his 10th goal of the season on slap shot form just inside the blue line. PC continued to pressure the Eagles throughout the third period, outshooting BC by a 10-3 margin. However, Eagle's goaltender Scott Clemmenson silenced PC the rest of the way and finished with a game-high 28 saves. Schaefer stopped 20 shots in the loss.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 17-6-1 overall and 10-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Providence fell to 13-7-3 and 7-5-1.

Providence College will return to action on Saturday, January 27 at UMass-Lowell at 7:00 p.m.
