Men's Hockey Ties UMass-Lowell, 3-3 In Overtime

LOWELL, MASS. -- The 10th-ranked Providence College Friars tied the UMass-Lowell River Hawks, 3-3 in overtime, in HOCKEY EAST action, on Saturday, January 27, 2001 at UMass-Lowell's Tsongas Arena. Drew Omicioli led the Friars with one goal and two assists.

UMass-Lowell took a 1-0 lead at the 13:18 mark of the first period, on Brad Rooney's power-play goal. Rooney snapped a pass from the blue-line that deflected off of a Providence defender's stick for the game's first goal. At 14:57 of the first period, the Friars' Peter Zingoni tallied his first collegiate goal, tying the game at 1-1. Zingoni received a pass from Drew Omicioli in the right slot and then wristed it past River Hawk's Jimi St. John.

Omicioli gave the Friars their first lead of the night, on a power-play goal at 19:02 of the first period. Omicioli intercepted a clearing pass at the left face-off circle, turned and ripped a slap shot past St. John.

At 15:28 of the second period the game was delayed more then seven minutes due to a shattered piece of glass. After the delay, the River Hawks' Kyle Kidney one-timed a pass from Rooney past PC's netminder Boyd Ballard, tying the game at 2-2, just 33-seconds after the teams resumed play.

UMass-Lowell regained the lead at the 3:32 mark of the third period. Kidney tallied his second goal of the night. The Friars' Heath Gordon tied the game at the 10:00 mark, his first goal of the season. Zingoni controlled the puck in the corner and fired a pass to Gordon who one-timed the puck past St. John.

Ballard stopped 31 shots for the Friars while St. John turned away 15 shots for UMass-Lowell.

With the tie, Providence's stands at13-7-4 overall and 7-5-2 in league play, while UMass-Lowell is now 12-10-3 and 5-7-3 in HOCKEY EAST action.

The Friars will return to action on Friday, February 2, at Northeastern at 7:00 p.m.
