Providence Women's Soccer Earns First BIG EAST Victory

The Providence College women's soccer team scored three goals in the first half en route to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Tech on Friday, October 12 in BIG EAST soccer action at Glay field.

Junior midfielder Kyle McAuley (Trumbull, Conn.) put the Friars on the board in the 16th minute as she beat two Virginia Tech defenders and fired a shot from 12 yards out. Less than three minutes later, the Friars took a 2-0 lead as freshman midfielder Kate Kearney (Glastonbury, Conn.) collected a rebound off Virginia Tech goalkeeper Katie Hancock (Stockon, Md.) and scored her third goal of the year. Freshman midfielder Maura Robertson (Wellesley, Mass.) scored PC's third goal on a brilliant individual effort. Robertson dribbled by four defenders and blasted a shot from 20 yards out to the upper left corner of the net.

The Hokies cut the lead to 3-1 in the 70th minute as senior forward Victoria Sarfo-Kantanka (Glen Allen, Va.) fired a shot from 30 yards out and beat PC goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.).

The Hokies outshot the Friars 19-15 as Haines made six saves. Hancock made five saves. The win was the first BIG EAST Northeast Division victory for the Friars since 1999. PC improved to 5-5-1, 1-4-1, while the Hokies fell to 6-5-2, 0-2-0.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, October 14 as they host Georgetown at 1:00 p.m. at PC's Glay field.
