Pittsburgh defeated Providence College, 3-2, in men's BIG EAST soccer action at Providence, R.I., on Saturday, October 20.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute as freshman midfielder Carlos Suero (Plantation, Fla.) headed in his first collegiate goal off a cross from senior midfielder Thomas Blesso (Billerica, Mass.). The Panthers tied the game in the 40th minute as Chris Churchhill (Sewickley, Pa.) fired a 20-yard shot off a direct free kick.

Pittsburgh went ahead, 2-1, in the 60th minute when freshman forward Jeff Krause (Littleton, Pa.) scored off an assist from junior midfielder John Occhiuto (Getzville, N.Y.). However, the Friars tied the game at 2-2 in the 72nd minute. Junior back Jon Alva-Cavero's blast from 25 yards out was blocked off the goal line, but graduate student Andrew Bussman (Guilford, Conn.) fired the rebound from five yards out for his first goal of the season.

The Panthers' Mark Sikora scored on a breakaway with 7:35 remaining in the game to give Pittsburgh its first BIG EAST win of the season. The Friars had an opportunity to tie the game with three seconds left in regulation, but Pittsburgh junior goalkeeper Justin Gaul (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) made a diving save on a shot by Providence sophomore back Greg Bennett (Dublin, Ireland).

Gaul made eight saves in the win. Friar junior goalkeeper Michael Greulich (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded 2 stops in the loss.

With the win, Pittsburgh improved to 4-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the BIG EAST, while Providence fell to 0-10-2 overall and 0-6 in league play.

Providence College returns to action on Wednesday, October 24 against Notre Dame at PC's Glay Field at 2:00 p.m.
