MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. -- The Providence College men's hockey team defeated Western Michigan University, 4-1, in the first game of the Mariucci Classic at the University of Minnesota's Mariucci Arena on Friday, December 28.
The Friars began the scoring in the second period when freshman center Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) slipped a shot from the low slot past Western Michigan's goaltender, Mike Mantua. Sophomore defenseman Regan Kelly (Imperial, Sask.) scored his second goal of the season at the 19:07 mark of the period when he converted on a feed from junior forward Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio).
The Broncos cut the Providence lead to one goal when Shaun Rose fired a power-play goal past PC's Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.). PC increased their margin when junior captain Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) broke in all alone on Mantua and flipped a back-handed shot of the goaltender's left shoulder.
Sophomore Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) scored the game's final goal with an empty-netter with 26 seconds remaining in the contest.
Schaefer earned the win and made 31 saves while Mantua recorded 25 saves.
The Friars play in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic against either Minnesota or Ferris State. Game time will be determined after the Minnesota/Ferris St. contest.
