Women's Hockey Hosts Two Games This Weekend

Niagara University Purple Eagles (11-3-0/8-1-0 ECAC Eastern) - The eighth-ranked Niagara University women's hockey team is coming off a 4-2 home loss against Harvard on Sunday, December 2. Amanda Reid and Valerie Hall each scored for the Purple Eagles. Hall leads Niagara in scoring with 11 goals and seven assists (18 points) while Teresa Marchese-Del Monte is second with five goals and 10 assists (15 points). The Friars lead the all-time series, 4-3-1. This season, Niagara has defeated the Friars twice at Niagara. On November 9, the Purple Eagles blanked the Friars, 3-0. Hall scored all three goals for the Purple Eagles, while goaltender Tania Pinelli stopped all 29 shots, as the Friars held a 29-12 shot advantage. On November 10, Niagara posted a 5-0 win over the Friars. Marchese-Del Monte scored three goals and Pinelli made 24 saves in the win. For the season, Pinelli has a 1.56 goals against average and three shutouts, two of which came against the Friars.

Brown University Bears (4-4-1/4-3-0 ECAC Northern) - The seventh-ranked Brown University Bears come into Sunday's Mayor's Cup following a 4-2 victory at St. Lawrence on Saturday, December 1. Brown scored three third period goals to overcome a 2-1 deficit. Brown's scoring came from four different players, including freshman Katie Guay, who tallied the game winner. Junior Kim Insalaco posted one goal and one assist in the win. Sophomore Krissy McManus leads the Bears in scoring with five goals and five assists (10 points), while senior Kristy Zamora is second with five goals and three assists (eight points). The Bears won both meetings against the Friars last season, including a 2-0 win in the Mayor's Cup on January 12, 2001 at Meehan Auditorium. Brown captured the inaugural Mayor's Cup in 1998, defeating the Friars, 4-3, at Brown. The Bears have a 4-1-1 Mayor's Cup record against the Friars and a 17-26-1 all-time record.

Providence College Friars (4-7-2/1-4-1 ECAC Eastern) - The Providence College women's hockey team hosts the eighth-ranked Niagara University Purple Eagles on Saturday, December 8 at PC's Schneider Arena. The Friars also host the seventh-ranked Brown University Bears on Sunday, December 9 for the Mayor's Cup. The Friars are coming off two losses against Northeastern last weekend. On Saturday, December 1, the Friars fell to the Huskies, 6-3, at Schneider Arena. PC jumped ahead, 2-0, on first period goals by freshman Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) and junior Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.), but the Huskies tied the game in the first period and led 4-2 after two periods. NU went ahead 5-2, before freshman Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored her first collegiate goal to make it 5-3. The Huskies added another goal to complete the scoring. On Sunday, December 2, the Friars fell, 3-2, to the Huskies at Matthews Arena. The Friars again went ahead, 2-0, on first period goals Greaves and sophomore Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba). The Huskies tied the game with two second period goals and scored the game winner in the third period to complete the weekend sweep. Junior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) leads the Friars in scoring with six goals and five assists (11 points), while Stephenson, Culgin and sophomore Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) are tied for second with 10 points each. PC holds a 4-3-1 all-time record against Niagara. The Purple Eagles defeated the Friars twice (3-0, 5-0) earlier this season. Providence holds a 26-17-1 all-time series lead over Brown. However, the Bears have an 8-1-1 record against the Friars over the last 10 meetings dating back to the 1997-98 season. In the Mayor's Cup, the Bears have 4-1-1 overall record. PC's last win over Brown came in January 23, 1998 at Schneider Arena. That was also the Friars' lone Mayor's Cup win.
