The Providence College women's soccer team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 3-0, on Sunday September 2 at Glay Field. PC was led by freshman Maura Robertson (Wellesley, Mass.), who scored one goal and two assists to give PC its first win over Rhode Island since 1997.
After a scoreless first half, the Friars tallied the only goal they would need in the 52nd minute as Robertson's pass found freshman forward Veronica Bakke (Aalesund, Norway), who beat Rhode Island's goalkeeper Jamie Epperlein (Woodbine, Md.) from 15 yards out.
The Friars increased their lead when Kate Kearney (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Robertson in the 70th minute. Robertson capped off the afternoon as she scored on a blast from 18 yards out in the 75th minute.
The Rams outshot the Friars 11-6. Friar goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Mass.) made five saves as she earned her fifth career shutout. Epperlein finished with four saves.
With the win the Friars improved to 2-0, while the Rams fell to 0-1.
