PROVIDENCE WOMEN'S SOCCER TIES BOSTON COLLEGE, 2-2

The Providence College women's soccer team played to a 2-2 against Boston College in BIG EAST Northeast Division action, on Sunday September 23 at PC's Glay Field.

Providence took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when freshman Maura Robertson's (Wellesley, Mass.) cross found senior forward Caitlyn Welsh (Winter Springs, Fla.) who headed in her second goal of the season. Boston College tied the game at 1-1 as freshman midfielder Lindsey Fairweather (Kingston, Mass.) scored off a Carolyn Iocabelli (Scottsdale, Ariz.) corner kick.

The Friars took a 2-1 lead early in the second half as freshman forward Veronica Bakke (Aalesund, Norway) stole a clearing pass from the Eagles' defense and blasted a shot that found the back of the net from 15 yards out in the 57th minute. The Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the 69th minute when Iacobelli's cross found sophomore midfielder Sarah Rahko (Londonderry, N.H.) who headed the ball into an empty net.

Both teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods with the Eagles outshooting Friars 8-1 in the extra sessions. BC outshot PC 17-12 overall. Providence sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) made seven saves, while sophomore Meredith Crotty (Santa Rosa, Calif.) stopped two shots for Boston College.

The 2-2 tie, marked the first time the Friars have not been defeated by the Eagles in the regular season since 1991. The Friars moved to 3-1-1, 0-0-1 BIG EAST and the Eagles moved 1-3-1, 0-0-1 BIG EAST.

PC returns to action on Tuesday, September 25 when they travel New Hampshire for a 4:00 p.m. game.
