Senior forward Caitlyn Welsh (Winter Springs, Fla.) scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute to lead the Providence College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Quinnipiac on September 7, at Glay Field.
Providence and Quinnipiac battled through a scoreless first half with the Braves outshooting the Friars 10-6. However, the Friars broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute. Freshman forward Veronica Bakke's (Aalesund, Norway) pass found junior midfielder Kyle McAuley (Trumbull, Conn.), whose one-time blast found the upper left corner of the net.
The Braves responded in the 70th minute as Elisa Goncalves (South Windsor, Conn.) scored on a through pass from senior midfielder Kristin Rathbone (E. Woodstock, Conn.) to even the score at 1-1. Two minutes later senior forward Caitlyn Welsh (Winter Springs, Fla.) tallied the game winner. Freshman midfielder Maura Robertson (Wellesley, Mass.) led Welsh with a through pass and she fired a low shot past Quinnipiac's goalkeeper Jenna Lawless (West Springfield, Mass.).
Quinnipiac which fell to 2-1, outshot the Friars 14-11. The Friars improved to 3-0, which marks their best start for Providence since 1990. Providence's sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) halted six shots, while Lawless made five saves.
