SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Syracuse University in BIG EAST Conference play, 81-52, in Syracuse, N.Y., on Saturday, January 12.
The Friars were led by graduate student Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.), who scored a season-high 18 points, and pulled down a team-high five rebounds. Trippany connected on seven of her 10 attempts from the field, including a perfect three-for-three from beyond the three-point arc. She also made good on her only free-throw attempt of the day, and registered one assist and one steal. Freshman Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) recorded 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
The Orangewomen got off to a quick, 4-0, lead and never trailed at any point during the game. Syracuse guard Jaime James led all scorers with 21 points, and recorded a game-high eight assists to go along with eight rebounds, two steals and one block. Julie McBride scored 16 points and dished out six assists. Leaf Newman tallied 14 points and handed out five assists, and Shannon Perry scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Providence falls to 8-8 overall, and 2-3 in the BIG EAST. The Orangewomen improve to 8-5, and 2-1 in BIG EAST action. The Friars will travel to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts to take on Boston College in more BIG EAST action on Tuesday, January 15. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
