Men's Soccer Defeats Quinnipiac In Overtime, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence sophomore forward Jeff Smith (Omaha, Neb.) scored 3:47 into the first overtime to give the Friars a 3-2 victory over Quinnipiac in men's soccer action at Providence, R.I., on Tuesday, October 29.

Providence freshman Ian Wexler (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored the first goal of the game when he kicked in a rebound at 23:03. Quinnipiac's Jason Mammen tied the game at 1-1 with just 24 seconds remaining in the first half.

The Bobcats took their first lead of the game at 49:02 on a goal by Joseph Caternor. Caternor kicked in a loose ball from 10 feet in front of the net. Wexler scored his second goal of the game at 58:14 to tie the game at 2-2.

With four minutes remaining in regulation, Providence was awarded a penalty kick. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Conor Shilcock-Elliott, who made 11 saves in the game, stopped the penalty kick attempt by PC freshman Derek Nobrega (Cumberland, R.I.) to perserve the tie and send the game into overtime.

The Friars quickly pressured Quinnipiac in overtime and were able to earn the win when Smith headed in a cross off a corner kick by junior Jonathan Rhode (Guilford, Conn.).

With the win, Providence improved to 5-10 overall, while Quinnipiac fell to 0-12-2.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, November 2 at Pittsburgh at PC's Glay Field at 1:00 p.m.
