AMHERST, Mass. -- The 11th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team defeated UMass, 2-1, in overime on Friday, November 1 at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. Junior Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) scored 46 seconds into the overtime session to lead the Friars to their sixth consecutive victory. The victory marks the first time the Friars have started 6-0 since the 1976-77 season. The win also marked the first time the Friars have won consecutive overtime games since the 1992-93 season.
PC opened the scoring early in the first period as senior Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) collected a rebound in front of the net and scored his third goal of the season at 10:44. UMass tied the game at the 18:16 mark of the second period on a goal by Mike Werner.
After a scoreless third period, Loughlean collected a loose puck just inside the faceoff circle and fired a wrist shot past UMass goaltender Gabe Winer.
Providence netminder Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) stopped 27 of the 28 Minutemen shots to improve to 4-0. Winer made 19 saves in the loss.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, November 3 when they host Princeton at Schneider Arena. Opening faceoff is at 2:00 p.m.
