PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 12th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Merrimack College on Friday, November 22 in HOCKEY EAST action at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Providence graduate student Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) scored the tying goal on a power-play with 3:35 remaining in the game to force the 2-2 tie.
After a scoreless first period, Merrimack's Tim Reidy tallied the first goal of the game during a power-play at 7:20 of the second period. Bryan Schmidt fired a shot from the point which Reidy redirected between Friar goaltender Bobby Goepfert's legs. Providence evened the score at the 11:52 mark of the second period when sophomore Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) wristed in a shot from five feet in front of the net.
In the third period, Blake Stewart broke up a play at his own blueline and broke in to score the go-ahead goal for Merrimack as the Warriors took a 2-1 lead at the 4:38 mark of the third period. Providence pressured Merrimack but could not get the tying goal past Warrior netminder Joe Exter. Exter made a number of strong saves to keep Merrimack in the game. The Friars were finally able to get their second goal of the night as Fregoe pushed in a rebound off of Stephen Wood's blast from the point on a power play.
Providence outshot Merrimack, 49-36. Exter finished with 47 saves and earned the game's No. 1 star. Goepfert also played well in net, making 34 stops for the Friars.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, November 23 versus Merrimack in North Andover, Mass. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
