Brown University Bears (0-1): The Bears face the Friars as they look to rebound from a, 78-63, season-opening loss against Fordham on November 22. Brown was led by freshman guard Colleen Kelly's (Rochester, N.Y.) 20 points and four steals. The leading rebounder for the Bears (seven) was junior forward Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, Ala.). She and junior guard Tanara Golston (Skokie, Ill.) were the only other Bears who scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Brown shot 38.7-percent on 24-62 from the field and 58.8-percent on 10-19 from the free throw line. The Bears return just two starters from a team that finished the 2001-02 season with a 5-22 record. Head Coach Jean Marie Burr is in her 15th season at Brown and is the winningest coach in Brown basketball history (men's or women's). Burr has faced the Friars twice, in 1992 and last season, and has recorded a 1-1 record in those games.
Providence College Friars (1-1): The Providence College women's basketball team opens its home schedule as they face the Brown University Bears. The Friars split two games at the Banknorth Classic at the University of Vermont on November 22-23. In its first game, Providence defeated Navy, 70-62, as sophomore guard Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) led three Friars in double figures with 14 points. The other two double figure scorers were senior guard Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) and senior forward Kacee Wheeler (Bakersfield, Calif.) with 12 and 11 points, respectively. In the tournament final, Providence was defeated by Vermont, 65-49. Freeburg led the Friars with 16 points, while Epstein recorded 11 points in the loss. Sophomore forward Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) pulled down a game-high seven rebounds to lead Providence on the boards for the second-straight game. For their efforts at the Banknorth Classic, Freeburg and Epstein earned All-Tournament honors. On the season, Freeburg leads the Friars in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game. Epstein is second in scoring averaging 12.5 points per game. Simmonds leads the Friars on the boards with an average of 7.0 rebounds per game. Providence and Brown have met 15 times with the Friars owning a 12-3 record versus the Bears. Last season, the Friars defeated the Bears, 67-53, at the Pizzitola Sports Center on the campus of Brown University.
